Changing through the seasons

We make all sorts of changes as the seasons change. We swap out our clothing for warmer or lighter pieces. We plant flowers or vegetables in our gardens. We alter our clocks during daylight savings. We may put snow tires on our cars or partake in some spring cleaning.

After consistently being in the high 50s or 60s for several weeks where I live, it snowed this morning. I put on a coat I haven’t worn in several weeks and went into my backyard to take pictures of the blooming flowers covered in snow. The snow melted as quick as it came and as it did, I thought about this winter and the coming spring. The changes I’ve made in my life and what changes I’d like to see by the end of spring. I always think about winter as a time to be especially kind to oneself. Our surroundings are colder and darker. Now, with spring and longer days approaching, I try to encourage myself to do more and exchange cozier activities (eating comfort food and binging Netflix shows) for more active hobbies.

Few things bring me as much joy as a walk around my neighborhood enjoying the beautiful spring flowers. Walks are a great meditative activity and I’ll often lengthen my walks once the weather starts warming up. The warmer weather also means the start of allergy season, which is already hitting me hard this year. And the blooming of beautiful flowers also means the grass in my yard has started growing and needing to be mowed, one of my least favorite chores. Every season brings with it the good and the bad. But sometimes the bad can make the good all the more worthwhile.

Whatever season you’re in in the world or in your life, I hope you can embrace the changes happening around you and cultivate the things you’d like to grow.
